
It must be spring…






In the 1700’s and 1800’s Oblate priests served the territory between Brownsville and Roma. This was one of their stops on that route. The town of Mission, Texas is named in honor of La Lomita mission. It is located near the Rio Grande River.





My grandmother and mother made quilts not so fancy as these but just as special. Hand quilting has been replaced with machine quilting. I can still remember the quilt set up in the frame in the living room and a group of women around it hand quilting.

In Matthew chapter 15, Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus and asked a question about ceremonialism. He answered them then called the multitude to Himself and said, “Hear and understand. Not what enters into the mouth defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
This passage in Matthew inspired me to look at and write about some of the more challenging teachings of Jesus.

Years ago I had a 106 year old tell me about coming to deep south Texas as a young woman. She said among other things, “Everything had thorns.” It is true many of the plants here have thorns and some land is still brush country.
